The rugged peaks, such as Tre Cime di Lavaredo, stand tall over valleys and Mount Seekofel is majestic as it reflects in the crystal-clear Lake Braies.
One of the Dolomites' most appealing features is its extensive network of hiking trails catering to all skill levels. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll through alpine meadows or a challenging ascent to high-altitude refuges, there's a trail suited to your preferences. For those preferring day hikes, and the most incredible landscape we have ever seen, the Seceda Circuit is beyond rewarding. July will treat you to wildflower sights that brightly color the rolling hills for miles and miles, and depending on the trail you are hiking, you may be standing in Austria and Italy at the same time!
Beyond its natural wonders, the Dolomites offer a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. Traditional Tyrolean villages dot the landscape, their wooden chalets adorned with colorful window boxes. And, no hike is complete without sampling the region's culinary delights. Refuel with hearty dishes like speck (cured ham), polenta, and canederli (bread dumplings) at cozy mountain rifugios. Pair these delights with locally brewed beer or a glass of crisp South Tyrolean wine to savor the essence of Dolomite hospitality.
Before embarking on your Dolomites adventure, it's essential to prepare adequately. The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so packing layers and waterproof gear is advisable. We wore everything from summer hiking gear to raincoats and winter hats. I planned this group trip about a year out. We had a wonderful guide who shared with us the history of the dolomites that includes World War 1. He was very knowledgeable and funny and helped us with any issues or questions we had.
Hiking in the Dolomites transcends the mere act of walking; it's a journey of discovery and rejuvenation. My group had beginner to advanced level hikers. We all stuck together and made sure no on was left behind. Each trail unveils a new vista that will make you stop in your tracks and take moments to just soak it all in your memory. Each summit was an accomplishment to be proud of.
