To European Travel Strategies to Know - Part One

You've had Europe on your bucket list forever - the history, the food, the romance of it all! Now your big trip is booked, and you're so excited. But wait, you have some plans to do first! Don't worry, I've got your back.

Read my best tips to make your trip go smoothly!

Grab Cash from ATMs, Not the Airport

When you first land, may need some cash. Ideally, you already did this from your bank at home, but if not, try to avoid exchanging money at the airport booths. It is cheaper to exchange money at the bank, or by using an ATM, than the airport. Most places take credit cards but it many European countries, cash is required to use the bathrooms.

Guard Your Belongings from Sneaky Pickpockets

Pickpockets target tourists in big cities like Barcelona, Paris, and Rome - all the hotspots: crowded subways, jam-packed buses, busy landmarks - prime pickpocket territory. But you can outsmart them with a few simple precautions. I want you to have the best trip ever, not deal with the hassle of getting stuff stolen!

Get a slim money belt or cross body purse.  Use it to stash your cash, credit card, and passport.  Pickpockets look for easy targets like backpacks, purses, jackets, etc. You can also keep your passport in the hotel safe, but many historical sites such as the Vatican, want you to show your passport.

Don't publicly flash your shiny new iPhone around or wave tons of cash. Keep your head up and be extra careful in crowds. Pickpockets look for oblivious, distracted tourists. Take reasonable precautions, and you'll be fine.

Make Sure to Pack Comfy Walking Shoes

Get ready to get your steps in! You'll be strolling on cobblestones, up and down stairs, through giant train stations - you name it. Wherever you're exploring, make sure your shoes can go the distance!

Leave the cute ballet flats and flip-flops at home. As much as you love them, they won't hold up to hours of walking. Go for some nice sneakers, boots, or other comfy walking shoes instead. And be sure to break them in before your trip! Blisters are no joke.

I always pack at least one pair of cute, supportive sneakers with skirts or jeans. They're just as stylish as regular shoes but feel good for miles. Brooks and Sketchers are my favorite

Don't plan on touring around in heels or unsupportive shoes all day. Your feet will be screaming after a few hours! Bring some heels or sandals to mix in for dinners or nights at the club. But have good walking shoes as your daily sightseeing pair. Your body will thank you big time! Comfy feet mean you can see a lot more sights.

And a pro tip: stuff damp shoes with newspaper at night to help dry them out quicker. No one likes putting on wet shoes in the morning—ugh. It can damper your plans (lol, pun intended).

Understand Your Credit Card Fees - They Add Up Fast!

While cash is handy, using credit cards has some nice perks – such as earning points and miles. But make 100% sure you understand the fees to pick the best card for your trip. Call your card company before your trip and ask about the fees. If they charge it, consider getting a different card.

Some retailers may charge your card in US dollars instead of euros/pounds/etc. This may seem convenient on the surface but wait to do it! This ends up costing you more. Always pay in local currency to get the best rates.

A little homework makes a huge difference! Oh, and set up alerts on your phone so you catch any suspicious charges right away.
