Exploring the Majestic Dolomites: A Hiker's Paradise

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Italy lies a place where nature's grandeur reaches its pinnacle—the Dolomites. Known for their jagged peaks and lush valleys, the Dolomites offer a hiking experience unlike any other. Whether you're an avid trekker or a casual explorer, this UNESCO World Heritage site promises breathtaking vistas and unforgettable adventures.

This view is the whole reason I wanted to go to the Dolomites!

The Dolomites boast a unique geological makeup that sets them apart from other mountain ranges. Composed primarily of dolomite rock, these mountains shimmer with hues of pink and orange during sunrise and sunset, casting a magical glow across the landscape. The rugged peaks, such as Tre Cime di Lavaredo, stand tall over valleys and Mount Seekofel is majestic as it reflects in the crystal-clear Lake Braies.

One of the Dolomites' most appealing features is its extensive network of hiking trails catering to all skill levels. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll through alpine meadows or a challenging ascent to high-altitude refuges, there's a trail suited to your preferences. For those preferring day hikes, and the most incredible landscape we have ever seen, the Seceda Circuit is beyond rewarding.  July will treat you to wildflower sights that brightly color the rolling hills for miles and miles, and depending on the trail you are hiking, you may be standing in Austria and Italy at the same time!

Beyond its natural wonders, the Dolomites offer a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. Traditional Tyrolean villages dot the landscape, their wooden chalets adorned with colorful window boxes. And, no hike is complete without sampling the region's culinary delights. Refuel with hearty dishes like speck (cured ham), polenta, and canederli (bread dumplings) at cozy mountain rifugios. Pair these delights with locally brewed beer or a glass of crisp South Tyrolean wine to savor the essence of Dolomite hospitality.

Before embarking on your Dolomites adventure, it's essential to prepare adequately. The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so packing layers and waterproof gear is advisable. We wore everything from summer hiking gear to raincoats and winter hats.  I planned this group trip about a year out. We had a wonderful guide who shared with us the history of the dolomites that includes World War 1. He was very knowledgeable and funny and helped us with any issues or questions we had.

Hiking in the Dolomites transcends the mere act of walking; it's a journey of discovery and rejuvenation. My group had beginner to advanced level hikers. We all stuck together and made sure no on was left behind. Each trail unveils a new vista that will make you stop in your tracks and take moments to just soak it all in your memory. Each summit was an accomplishment to be proud of. So lace up your boots, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and immerse yourself in the majesty of the Dolomites—a hiker's paradise awaiting your exploration.

I would love to help you explore this region. Whether it is a small family trip or a large group trip, you will not regret visiting this majestic area! Please reach out so we can get started on your adventure of a lifetime!

Fado is the folk music of Lisbon's rustic neighborhoods

Lisbon is the epicenter of Fado, with numerous venues throughout the city where aficionados and tourists alike can experience this intimate musical tradition. The historic Alfama district, with its narrow cobblestone streets and intimate tavernas, remains one of the best places to hear authentic Fado performances.

These performances often take place in small, dimly lit restaurants or bars known as "Fado houses" (Casas de Fado), creating an intimate atmosphere where the audience can connect deeply with the music and its emotions.

This was one of my favorite activities we did in Lisbon. The music was so beautiful it brought me to tears. As as I sat and listened, I could not help but think that my daddy Vince would have enjoyed the performance. Maybe that is why it touched me to the core.

A famous Portuguese proverb says, "Trust the virgin and do not run away". (Fia-te na Virgem e não corras) - This encourages people to act. Because nothing happens by chance, and we cannot simply wait for something to happen without taking action.

Portugal was such a delight and I can see why people want to live there. The friendliness of the locals was heartwarming and we always felt more than welcome.

This tiny village of Dornes was such a pleasant surprise. We were pretty much the only people there except for maybe two locals. It was so peaceful!

I don't think I can choose a favorite between Porto and Lisbon. They both have their own charm and although similar, they each bring something different to the table....except for cod. They both bring a lot of cod. I never had it served so many ways before!

Surprisingly, our first meal had something I never thought I would like-breaded trout shaped like little balls. I actually thought I was eating a vegetable of some sort. I don't even like trout typically, but that was smoked and delicious!

I highly recommend you put Portugal on your list! Take the proverb to heart and "act now", because you really never know what can happen if you wait.

You could easily stay two weeks and see so much. The tile buildings and ancient churches are stunning. Most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. The village of Tomar is a must! I LOVED that place! So much to love about Portugal.

When you are ready to plan your vacation, reach out. I would love to help you. Here is my link to set up call and we can get started: https://calendly.com/storymakerstravel/vacation-phone-consult

Kauai - Where Love Blossoms Like Orchids

Hey there lovebirds and adventure seekers!  Ready to sprinkle a bit of romance into your life? Well, welcome to Kauai! The garden isle’s Aloha spirit wraps around you like a warm, welcoming hug. The locals radiate friendliness, making you feel like you've found a home away from home. It's the kind of vibe that turns a vacation into a lifetime of cherished memories.

This Hawaiian gem is like the love child of Mother Nature and Cupid. The cascading waterfalls and golden beaches create a backdrop so dreamy it makes Disney movies jealous. Seriously, if love were a destination, it would be Kauai. We recently spent a week there and have not stopped talking about it. It was gorgeous beyond gorgeous.

Kauai isn't just about sipping drinks on the beach (though that’s a solid option if that is your jam). But, it's a thrill-seeker's dream! Hike through the jaw-dropping Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. You will want to bring proper hiking boots though because it can rain a lot. It is so worth the amazing views and should not be missed.  Plus, you will see hundreds of friendly chickens in the canyon, as well as everywhere on the island. And don’t worry if it starts out foggy~ at first we could not see anything, but it all cleared up and we were wowed!

You may want to channel your inner Tarzan and Jane with a zipline adventure through the lush treetops. Nothing says "I love you" like conquering a zipline together, right?  We did not get to do that this time, but our rafting adventure to see the Napali Coast was phenomenal!

This is who we booked though: Raft Adventure - Na Pali Coast with Beach Landing. They are one of 3 companies that can go on land in that area. We did not get to do that because the waves were too strong, but if you are not there in winter, you may get to. Plus, we saw a shark swim right in front of us! I can’t remember if that was before or after we rafted into a cave that about spit us out like a washing machine. It was SO fun!

If you want enviable Instagramable photos,  Kauai serves up sunsets that would make even Monet rethink his masterpiece choices. Picture this: you and your better half, toes in the sand, watching the sun dip below the horizon, casting hues of pink, orange, and pure romance. And when the stars come out to play, Kauai's lack of city lights turns the sky into a dazzling celestial show. It's basically the universe saying, "Hey, you two, your love is out of this world!” Check out this cool moon photo we took!

Let's talk about food, the language of love. Kauai's got your taste buds covered with a fusion of Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific flavors….oh, so ono! Or, like they say in Hawaii, “It broke da mouth”.  Picture a beachfront dinner, the ocean breeze in your hair, and a plate of fresh poke. Trust us; your taste buds will be doing the hula.  A great tip is to go to Foodland and get your poke from the deli. It is ono and cheap!

Kauai is the kind of vibe that turns a honeymoon or family vacation into a lifetime of cherished memories. It is the ultimate paradise. I really loved learning about how they are working towards sustainability. It was very impressive. There are three main areas on the island that you can stay. We got to tour several resorts and meet their team member for a walk through. This is so helpful for me, so that I can help you plan the perfect Kauai vacation. When you are ready, please reach out and we can get started.

Kauai is calling and it's saying, "Book that vacation, and let the adventure of a lifetime begin!”

Biking Bliss and Turkish Delights: A Day in Vancouver

Hey there travel lovers! Today, we are taking you on a whirlwind journey to one of Canada’s most stunning cities – Vancouver. Get ready to pedal through lush greenery, soak in ocean views, and savor mouthwatering Turkish cuisine.

Our day started with an early morning drive from Anacortes, WA. As we drove across the border and eventually into Vancouver, we quickly noticed how clean the city was. The Fall foliage was starting to show its colors and gave us a burst of energy-we were excited to be out of the AZ heat!

We headed to the e-bike shop to pick up our rental and head to Stanley Park, a lush urban oasis nestled on the edge of the city. The air was chilly and crisp, and the scent of salt water filled our lungs. It is hard not to appreciate the park’s diverse ecosystem, unique flora and various wildlife such as geese and black squirrels. I had never seen a truly black squirrel before. We tried to get pictures, but they were fast and evaded our paparazzi intentions.

Weaving through the scenic Seawall, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the city skyline. Stanley Park’s pristine beauty was peaceful and welcoming on this holiday weekend. After our invigorating bike ride, it was time to satisfy our hunger pangs at Istanbul Doner.

The aromas of grilled meats, fragrant spices, and freshly baked bread greeted us as we stepped inside this charming eatery. We knew right away what we wanted to eat: Iskender Kebab. We fell in love with it while visiting Turkey in October 2023, and have been talking about it ever since. Finally, we found someplace that serves it! We took our to-go bag and headed to a patch of green grass and ate it right then and there. As we relished each bite, we couldn’t help but talk about the intricate dance of flavors. Whatever spices they use are sure to make your mouth happy!

After our satisfying meal, we ventured back into the city. I was so impressed with the vast amount of eateries from all around the world. There were restaurants for every flavor of food you could ever want, from Asian to Ukranian. The scents wafting through the streets was outstanding. This would be a great city to do a food tour!

Vancouver’s unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty made it so special and now one of our favorite cities. From historic Gastown to the vibrant streets of Granville Island, there was so much to see and do. People were exercising everywhere, families were out bike riding and we even passed a festival.

After our stroll through the incredible food market, and purchase of goat and fig cheese and cerigenoles olives, we reflected on our day of adventure and discovery as we drove through Chinatown. We would have spent more time there but most the stores were already closed due to the holiday.

Vancouver, with its stunning landscapes and culinary delights, has left an indelible mark on us. So, there you have it, a day trip to Vancouver filled with bikes, bites, and boundless beauty. Until our next adventure, stay curious and keep those wheels turning!

Greece as a solo female traveler vs Greece in a group: My experience

Traveling solo is not to be taken lightly, especially when you are a women. In my past I did it quite often and managed to stay safe and have wonderful experiences. I made both smart and dumb decisions, but that is how I learned how to navigate the world and be fearless when it comes to that.

In 2010 I went to Greece solo, during their financial crises and the riots that were happening in Athens. My friends were supposed to join me but got worried about safety. I distinctly remember thinking “I am going and I will just avoid the riots”….seems like common sense to me. Stay away from the fire!

I spent about nine days exploring Mykonos and Santorini. I missed Athens because my plane was late. At one point I was in my small hotel looking for something to read in English. I found a book that someone left behind, called “Girl, with the Dragon Tattoo” and set off to the beach. After tiring of the sun, I stood up and smashed my head on the umbrella. A few people chuckled, including myself. At that moment I started to feel lonely. It was fleeting until I was watching the sunset later that week.

Santorini is for sharing. It is phenomenal. Gorgeous, stunning, perfect in so many ways. Famous for its sunsets, I sat with a group of strangers and marveled at the colors in the sky. It was windy and cold and that is when it hit me: I wish I had someone to love and watch this with me. Now, I have always been independent but at that moment I wanted to be a part of something. I REALLY wanted it. I think I cried that night. I told myself that if I ever go back to Greece, I would go to Santorini again to experience it with someone.

Well, that is exactly what I did recently. Not only did I have one person I love, but I had four total. Friends I have known since I was in college or shortly after, and of course, my husband. This Greek experience was TOTALLY different. I felt like people were much more receptive and friendly. The first time I did not feel that way. I often wondered if the Greeks were unfriendly, distant or could just tell I was single and they wanted to give me my space. Perhaps, their economic crisis was weighing heavily on them so I was just another face in the crowd. Maybe it was me. I might have been giving off a vibe that made me unapproachable.

Red Sand Beach

This time, I can very much say that everyone was SO friendly! I am so happy I went back and got to be a part of it. I met a few friends last time but it was easier this time. My experience was so different this time. I ate way better (wasn’t a broke, about to be a student-again-traveler). I stayed in nicer places and had spending money. It was easier. I can see how traveling solo can be easier but I can see the other side too.

That being said, I am a huge advocate for women traveling solo. I encourage it. It made me who I am and I would do it again. But, maybe only for 4 days. I am just at a point where I like to be with my people. I am sure I have lived more than half of my life, so I prefer for the next half to be shared. I am so grateful for my solo travels, I sometimes yearn that lifestyle of packing up and going when I want, where I want and without worrying about anything. But, I also like worrying about my cats, missing my husband and looking forward to coming home after a long vacation. My home. No matter what your travel style is, just own it. As time goes on, that style can change, so embrace it and love it. Travel often.

Do you need a vacation after your vacation?

Are you an over planner or do you travel and wait for the unexpected to happen? I am an over planner. I often need a vacation from my vacation when I return home. I actually consider this to be one of my character defects. Spontaneity is not part of my DNA.

As a society, we are already overworked and overstressed, why do I add to it when I am going on vacation? The point of vacating is to escape our daily stressors. But, I get severe FOMO. What if I miss some new experience, would I regret it when I get back home? This is when I wish I could live forever so I can see everything! My curious mind goes on vacation to explore, see, do, experience….I can relax, you know, some other time.

I will say that I have gotten way better at leaving free time in my schedule. But, secretly I have many ideas of what can be done during that time. I just don’t plan it. I have to remember that my husband is also with me when we travel, so it is not all about me. He has learned how I am and I have learned that we don’t need to overdo it every day.

He is much more laid back and goes with the flow, whereas my eyes pop open at 3 a.m., I take a deep breathe and I am filled with excitement about what’s to come that day. He has taught me to slow down and enjoy the moment. To really appreciate what I am looking at and not get lost in projecting the day. Because of this, my travel memories are not jumbled. I remember the moment so much better.

As this new year begins and new adventures await, I want to make a conscience effort to slow down when on vacation. Read the book I always take and rarely read. Sip my iced tea at a cute cafe instead of feeling like I need to rush to the next point. Breathe. Vacate. Enjoy the moment.

What is an All Inclusive Resort?

Storymakers-Travel-All-Inclusive-Resort-Mexico.jpg

I got inspired to write this post because I was helping someone with a trip to Puerto Vallarta and she asked if her airport transfer would be able to take her to Costco to buy alcohol on the way to the resort. There was only two of them traveling together so I wondered why they would want more alcohol than what is included, so I asked her.

Storymakers-Travel-Swim-Up-Bar.jpg

She told me that she didn’t realize it was included. That made me wonder how many other people don’t know. Plus, people often tell me they would like to go to an all inclusive resort anywhere in the USA. But, true all inclusive resorts do not exist in the states with the exception of Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Florida.

The Caribbean and Mexico are destinations where true all-inclusive resorts can be found. This means your resort vacations generally include unlimited meals, beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), taxes and tips, on-site activities, and entertainment, which vary by resort; most always include non-motorized water sports but an additional charge may be required for motorized sports. Not all resorts are the same but this is a good rule of thumb of what you can expect.

Storymakers-Travel-Barcelo-Kids-Water-Park.jpg

The advantage of this type of travel is that there are no surprises at the end of your stay. You know what you are paying for and you can travel with minimal cash. This makes it easy to budget! Because it is a one-stop shop, the cost is often cheaper than if you were paying as you go. Plus, it is convenient. Families with children love this type of travel! I once had someone tell me that he only wanted an all inclusive resort because when his kids are hungry, there is not time to be going to town and looking for a place to eat. At the resort, everything is convenient and the kids can eat anytime they want. Happy fed kids makes for a happy vacation!

The type of resort you choose is important. There are large resorts, so large you need a golf cart or shuttle to get around. Boutique style are easier to get around but will it have everything you need or want? There are resorts that are quite and romantic and there are party resorts. No matter what style you want, it can be found. When clients reach out to me I have a list of questions I ask about what they are looking for in a resort. I didn’t use to do this but I have learned a lot as all inclusive resort travel has been huge in 2021.

We also stayed at a beautiful resort in Puerto Vallarta earlier this year. I loved how modern and chic it was, but it was not the resort for me. Why? Because it had more of a party vibe with loud music at the pool. Not my scene at all. I would much rather stay at a quieter resort. Why did I stay there? Because it is one I book often and wanted to experience it so I can better help you. Fortunately, we only stayed there one night and at a completely different style resort the other night, which was more my scene. That is why it is important to ask these questions when choosing a resort.

Here are a few examples of resorts that other travel agents love for family travel:

  1. Nickelodean Resort: There is a lot of fun to be had here, and they have connecting rooms.

  2. Barcelo: The kids waterpark (photo above) it is sure to make a splash! Plus you can pay for admission to the Pirates Park.

  3. Xcaret: Fun for the whole family! This resort is lovely and you have 8 parks to choose from! I’ve been to a few of the parks and it was one of my favorite Mexican vacations.

These resorts are in Mexico but there are also plenty of others on the Caribbean islands, although some islands are known for NOT having any, or very few, all inclusive resorts. There is a lot to consider when choosing a resort and I look forward to helping you!
